Spooky Season Snacks in Hawai’i

Though I haven’t proved it much in the past, I love spooky season. I think I might even love it more as an adult, to be honest with you. I’m trying my best to get as festive as I can this year, and for me, that includes food! I scoured the web and did my best to find the treats in Hawai’i that are festive, be it for “autumn” (even though we don’t have it) or Halloween. I love a good pumpkin flavored snack, so be prepared to see tons of that!

  1. Leonard’s Bakery October Flavor of the Month – Pumpkin

A classic. I most often get down with the chocolate or haupia fillings for my malasadas, but I’m very willing to give pumpkin a shot. Where can you go wrong?! I need to stop by ASAP!

2. Kulu Kulu – Special Halloween Cakes

Already known for its light cakes and enticing desserts, Kulu Kulu ups its game by making Halloween themed sweets. There are four new treats for the season that I can’t wait to try!

  • The Black Cat Mousse Cake is filled with sweet chocolate mousse, along with passion fruit mousse and mango mousse. The mousse trio is then blanketed with a rich chocolate and topped with a cute cat
  • Frankenstein’s Chocolate Mint Cake is a chocolate cake layered with strawberry jam and topped with a mint cream to create the canvas for Frankenstein’s funny little face
  • The Spooky Okinawan Sweet Potato Puff is colored black then filled with purple cream that is Okinawan sweet potato flavored. Yum!
  • Last but not least, the Jack-O-Lantern Cupcake is the simplest of the treats, being a chocolate chip cupcake topped with a pumpkin cream, and jack-o-lantern decor to match

3. La Tour Cafe’s Monthly Kouign Amann Flavor – Pumpkin Spice’d Latte
+ La Tour Cafe’s Halloween Macaron Flavor – Pumpkin Cheesecake

La Tour Cafe has always been ahead of the game with food and fusion. Their macarons are always spot on, and I’ve never seen kouign amans be so creative, but here they are, making them look absolutely irresistible. I might just have to head there tomorrow..

4. Banán – Halloween Drinks + Soft Serve Menu

Tired of sweets? Ah, yeah, me either.. BUT we need to think about healthy treats too! Banán saves the day with their Halloween menu, and I’ve already tried 2 items! Think you can beat me to trying the third?!

  • The Zak-O-Lantern is their new pumpkin spiced smoothie. Why’s it black, you ask? They mixed activated charcoal and almond milk for some sweetness and Halloween fun!
  • Their Black Sesame Banán shouldn’t make your teeth go black, but yes, it is as black as it looks. They blended their infamous bananas with a ton of black sesame, and voila– the perfect spooky snack.
  • The Basic Witch is basic in the sense that it’s a simple ginger lemonade mixed with activated charcoal, but worry not! It’s sweetened with local honey. This will not make your teeth black, I promise! It will, however, cleanse your stomach.

5. Lahaina Shave Ice Flavor of the Month – Homemade Pumpkin Spice

I’ve never drooled more. This is the flavor of my dreams! If the homemade pumpkin spice puree syrup wasn’t enough, they topped it with cinnamon, vanilla ice cream AND caramel condensed milk. PLEASE get me on the next flight, STAT!

6. Asato Family Shop October “Candy” Flavors – Flavor #1 Sour Green Apple

I wrote #1 for a reason. There’ll be more “candy” flavors, so they say! Can’t wait to see what the sherbet kings and queens come up with next. This is definitely a fun, festive flavor.. Can you guess what else they have in store? I’m hoping for some cinnamon pumpkin flavors, or maybe.. Dare I say, candy corn!?

9. Maui Nata’s October Flavor of the Month – Pumpkin Nata

If you didn’t know, Nata is short for “Pastéis de Nata,” otherwise known as a Portuguese Custard Tart. Maui Nata is bringing back their iconic flavor, the first one they ever featured, for the fall month of October! Get your hands on it, PLEASE, because I wish I could! How much are tickets to Maui, again?
